May 2 2012. All day and night on a train

Not much to report today. We checked in to our sleeper compartment at 9.20 this morning on the Amtrak "Coast Starlight" service from Seattle to LA, although we will be detraining (as they say here) when we reach Sacramento at 6.15 tomorrow morning. The Amtrak rolling stock is clearly getting on in years, but the staff are friendly and helpful. The odd thing is that they bill this service as one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the world, especially in the Pacific North-West section of the trip, but although you do glimpse some lovely stuff, it's usually just a glimpse because for nearly the whole of the way down we are either travelling in a cutting or there are so many trees growing close to the tracks that you can't really see much at all. I found the experience a little disappointing in that respect, although as we were having pre-dinner drinks at about 7.30 this evening we found ourselves travelling through a mountain pass in a snowstorm, which was pretty nice.

Ah well, tomorrow we drive out to Yosemite, so I think we are guaranteed proper scenery there!
